| How
is Academic Advisement structured at Georgia Southern?
Georgia Southern has 7 undergraduate advisement centers, one associated with
each of the six colleges offering bachelor’s degrees, and one for undeclared
students within the First-Year Experience program. Distribution of students
in a major between staff and faculty advisors varies from college to college.
When does advisement and registration occur?
Typically advisement begins around week 4 of each fall semester, and
slightly earlier in spring semester. Registration occurs in stages,
starting with Seniors, Post-Bacs and Athletes in week 11 of the fall,
week 7 in Spring. Dates vary each term; refer to the Registrar’s
homepage for Academic Calendar information.
When can students make adjustment to their schedule? What
is the final day to withdraw without academic penalty?
Students may drop and add classes each term up until the end of the 4th
day of the semester. After this date, a student may withdraw from
a course without academic penalty until the mid-point of the semester. Dates
vary each term; refer to the Registrar’s homepage for Academic
Calendar information.
When are students given a Registration Access Number (RAN)?
Students are given a RAN only after being advised each semester. RANs
are distinct for each term, and will not be re-used during a student’s
time at Georgia Southern.
How does a student declare or change their major?
A student must complete a change of major form in the advisement center
(or with the faculty advisor) of their initial major. Provided
the student meets the criteria to enter the new major (GPA requirements,
credit hour minimum, etc.) the initial advisement center will approve
a release of the file to the new advisement center or advisor. Students
must print a “Degree Evaluation” from their WINGS account
of the “What-If” analysis for the new major. Students
should not be asked to deliver their own file to the new advisement
center; this will be done by the advisement center staff.
Where can students or advisors view the course catalog?
Both current and past catalogs are available online through the Registrar’s
website.
Are advisors allowed to speak with a student’s parent,
spouse or other relative regarding the student’s academic information?
Advisors
must maintain students’ privacy by not speaking with any
other individual regarding the student’s progress, unless the student
has specifically granted access for that individual by completing a waiver
in the Registrar’s office. Advisors may view individuals approved
by a student by opening the SOAFOLK screen of BANNER. Directory information
(including if a student is registered during a term) is not restricted.
