What is early
advisement or pre-advisement?
At Georgia Southern University,
transfer students are “early
advised” which means they are advised prior to the Southern Orientation
Advisement and Registration (SOAR) session. Advantages of early
advisement:
- Transfer students attend an abbreviated SOAR session.
- Transfer students are able to register for their classes immediately
upon completing WINGS training at SOAR.
- In some cases, early advisement also enables your advisor to pre-register
you for critical courses, thereby ensuring that you will get into the
class.
How is early advisement initiated?
When you are accepted into Georgia Southern University, the
advisement center responsible for your major will contact you regarding
scheduling an early advisement appointment. Early advisement can be conducted
over the phone, face-to-face, or through email. If contacted and asked
to return a phone call, please do so at your earliest convenience.
What do I need for early advisement?
In preparation for your early advisement appointment, be sure that
Georgia Southern has your most updated official transcript from your
current institution. If you are currently enrolled in classes but have
not received your grades, you will need to send a second official transcript
to Georgia Southern when you have completed the classes and the grades
are posted on your transcript.
You will also need to review the four-year
plan of study for your major and two-year course rotations to consider
what courses you might like to take. This information can be found at http://academics.georgiasouthern.edu/advisement/programs.html.
Finally, be sure to communicate to your new advisor any courses in which
you may be currently enrolled.
Are all degree programs early advised?
No, students
transferring into GTREP (Georgia Tech Regional Engineering Program),
RETP (Regents Engineering Transfer Program), TOP (Technology Options
Program), Music, or the RN to BSN program are not early advised and will
need to attend the full SOAR session. Students in the RN to BSN program
should contact the RN-BSN Office at rn_bsninfo@georgiasouthern.edu for
information.
What is a Golden Ticket?
When you have been early advised, you will receive a Golden Ticket
at the Southern Orientation, Advisement, and Registration (SOAR) session.
This Golden Ticket indicates that you have already been advised so you
will be permitted to proceed to WINGS training so that you can register
for your classes. You do not need to attend the advisement session scheduled
at SOAR.
Do I need to attend SOAR?
Yes, you will need to attend all of the sessions at SOAR unless
you have been early advised. If you have been early advised, you will
receive a Golden Ticket which means that you do not need to attend the
advisement session. You will still need to attend all of the other SOAR
sessions and should plan on staying until 5 p.m.
I have taken mostly core classes at my current institution.
Will these be transferable to Georgia Southern University?
If the institution from which you are transferring is a University
System of Georgia institution, then you need to read the information
on the University
System’s website, found at http://www.usg.edu/academics/programs/core_curriculum/faq.phtml.
If the institution from which you are transferring is not a University
System of Georgia institution, your core classes will need to be evaluated
for transferability.
Will courses taken outside of the core curriculum and courses
taken in the major be transferable to Georgia Southern University?
When
you have been accepted into Georgia Southern University, all of the
classes taken will be evaluated for transferability based upon your
intended program of study and as many applied to your major as possible.
Will my Associates degree transfer to Georgia Southern University?
Students
must have completed a transferable A.A. or A.S. degree with a 2.0 cumulative
GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in a college or university parallel curriculum to
be admitted to Georgia Southern University. When admitted, the courses
taken at the previous institution will be evaluated for transferability
based upon the intended program of study.
