Java and Other ScriptsWhen pages use scripting languages to display content like navigation menus, or to create interactive elements like dropdown menus, the information provided by the script should be identified with functional text that can be read by assistive technology. Alternately, you can provide standard text links in addition to the script. You should test your Java or other scripts with a screen reader before using them on your site. The example below is a representation of a Java menu that flashes out to the right when you mouse over the words on the menu. The words in the first column: Home, CEO's Message, Success Stories, etc., can more than likely be read by a screen reader. The text that appears in the part that flashes out cannot be read by the screen reader.
The following an example is a rollover link using two graphic images. Java controls the rollover action. Alternate text can be added to the image you see below; thereby, allowing Jaws to speak the link. Hold your mouse over the image below to see the alt text.
